CARE is hiring a Full-Time Manager, Donor Communications and Engagement, based in San Francisco, California. This role offers a competitive salary ranging from $84,657.92 to $98,414.83 annually, reflecting both the responsibility and opportunity it brings.
If you’re a communications professional who thrives at the intersection of storytelling, strategy, and social impact, this could be your chance to help shape the future of a globally respected organization—while advancing humanitarian change where it’s needed most.
About CARE: A Legacy of Humanitarian Leadership
Founded in 1945 with the delivery of CARE Packages to survivors of World War II, CARE is now one of the world’s largest international humanitarian organizations. It works in over 100 countries to fight poverty, defend dignity, and respond to emergencies—placing special emphasis on the empowerment of women and girls as the cornerstone of its approach.
CARE’s mission is grounded in social justice, gender equality, and sustainable development. Its programs span health, education, food and nutrition, economic development, and disaster relief. Behind these life-changing efforts are donors—individuals, foundations, corporations, and institutions—whose contributions make CARE’s work possible.
The Manager, Donor Communications and Engagement plays a crucial role in honoring that support through clear, compelling, and mission-aligned communication.
About the Role: Manager, Donor Communications and Engagement
This isn’t your average communications role. As the Manager, Donor Communications and Engagement, you’ll be a key player in designing and executing CARE’s donor stewardship strategy—one that connects donors with the real impact of their giving.
Working within the Development team and in close collaboration with CARE’s programs, creative, and leadership teams, you’ll ensure donors feel valued, informed, and inspired. This position is ideal for someone who blends creativity with structure, storytelling with analytics, and heart with hustle.
Primary Responsibilities:
Strategic Communication Planning
- Develop and implement integrated communication plans to steward and engage donors, especially major gift and mid-level donors.
- Design audience-specific content strategies that align with CARE’s mission and fundraising goals.
Content Creation & Storytelling
- Write, edit, and oversee the production of donor reports, newsletters, email updates, and impact stories.
- Ensure all donor-facing content is accurate, timely, emotionally resonant, and reflective of CARE’s brand.
Engagement Campaigns & Events
- Collaborate on donor engagement campaigns across print, digital, and in-person channels.
- Help plan and coordinate exclusive events, briefings, or virtual experiences to deepen donor relationships.
Donor Experience Enhancement
- Improve donor journeys and feedback loops by developing materials that reinforce CARE’s value proposition and transparency.
- Partner with stewardship and fundraising teams to ensure donors are recognized appropriately.
Collaboration Across Teams
- Serve as a bridge between CARE’s programs and development functions, translating complex programmatic outcomes into accessible donor language.
- Work closely with creative, digital, and data teams to track communication impact and adjust strategies accordingly.
Who Should Apply?
This position is designed for a seasoned communicator and relationship builder who understands both the art and science of donor engagement. You are fluent in empathy, metrics, and messaging. You bring energy, professionalism, and purpose to every project you touch.
Ideal Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Philanthropy, or a related field.
- 5+ years of professional experience in donor communications, nonprofit marketing, or fundraising strategy.
- Demonstrated ability to develop integrated communication campaigns with a focus on donor retention and satisfaction.
- Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills tailored to philanthropic audiences.
- Experience working in a CRM or donor database environment (Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge, or similar).
- Ability to juggle multiple projects, collaborate across teams, and meet deadlines under pressure.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a high degree of cultural and emotional intelligence.
Preferred but not required:
- Experience working in international development or humanitarian aid.
- Understanding of donor behavior in both digital and traditional giving environments.
- Knowledge of industry best practices in donor stewardship, reporting, and gratitude.

This is a full-time, exempt position located in San Francisco, California, with a salary range of $84,657.92 to $98,414.83 annually, depending on qualifications and experience.
CARE offers a competitive benefits package, including:
- Health, dental, and vision insurance
- Generous paid time off (vacation, sick, holidays)
