Company Overview

Headquartered along Airport North Road in Embakasi, Nairobi, Kenya Airways operates primarily out of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). The company operates within the aviation industry, providing passenger and cargo transport, ground handling, maintenance, and aviation training services.

It functions as a public-private partnership:

  • KQ Lenders Company 2017 Ltd. (a bank consortium) holds 38.1%
  • KLM Royal Dutch Airlines owns 7.8%
  • The rest is held by private investors and traded on stock exchanges in Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, and Uganda

As the first African flag carrier to be privatized (in 1996), the airline employs around 6,700 staff globally.

Operational Snapshot

Kenya Airways flies to 51 destinations around the world, including 43 in Africa, making it a critical player in intra-African connectivity. At its peak in 2019, it served over 5 million passengers annually.

The airline operates a fleet of approximately 35 aircraft, including:

  • Boeing 787 Dreamliners
  • Boeing 737s
  • Embraer E190s
  • Boeing 737 freighters
  • Bombardier Dash 8-400s

Its fleet is among the youngest in Africa, helping maintain high efficiency and performance standards.

Beyond passenger transport, KQ is a major cargo carrier, operating key routes to London, Amsterdam, Guangzhou, Sharjah, and Mumbai. It also offers technical maintenance, aviation training, and ground services.

Kenya Airways is the only African airline in the SkyTeam Alliance (since 2007), working with partners like KLM, Air France, and Korean Air. Frequent flyers enjoy Asante Rewards, which lets them earn and redeem miles across the SkyTeam network.

Financial Highlights

As of November 2024, Kenya Airways reported $5 billion in revenue. After years of losses, the airline posted a KShs 5.4 billion profit, a remarkable turnaround from the KShs 22.7 billion loss in 2023.
