Position(s): Senior GBV Assistant
Organization: UNHCR
Deadline: 10 July 2025
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is at the forefront of providing protection and advocating for survivors of GBV. If you are a passionate professional with a commitment to making a tangible difference in the lives of displaced populations, this opportunity is for you.UNHCR is currently hiring for a full-time Senior Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Assistant position. The deadline to apply is July 10, 2025. This role offers a chance to be part of a global mission to protect some of the world’s most at-risk populations, with a particular focus on supporting survivors of GBV and preventing future occurrences.
About UNHCR and Its Mission
UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, was established in 1950 in the aftermath of World War II to help displaced Europeans. Over the decades, its mandate has expanded significantly to include the protection of refugees, asylum-seekers, internally displaced persons, and stateless individuals across the globe. UNHCR operates in over 130 countries, often in the most challenging humanitarian settings, working in partnership with governments, NGOs, and communities to provide shelter, education, healthcare, and legal support.
UNHCR’s approach to GBV is rooted in the principles of protection, human rights, and empowerment. Through advocacy, direct services, and capacity-building initiatives, the agency strives to create safer environments where survivors can heal and rebuild their lives.
The Importance of Addressing Gender-Based Violence in Humanitarian Contexts
GBV is one of the most pervasive human rights violations worldwide. In refugee and displacement contexts, the risks are amplified due to instability, breakdown of protective systems, overcrowded shelters, limited access to justice, and lack of livelihood opportunities. Women and girls are disproportionately affected, though men and boys can also be victims.
Forms of GBV include sexual violence, domestic abuse, forced marriage, trafficking, and exploitation. These violations not only cause immediate physical and psychological harm but also have long-term impacts on health, economic independence, and community cohesion.
To address this complex issue, UNHCR integrates GBV prevention and response into all aspects of its humanitarian programming. This includes training staff and partners, implementing safe reporting mechanisms, supporting legal frameworks, and delivering survivor-centered services.
The Role of the Senior GBV Assistant
As a Senior GBV Assistant, you will play a pivotal role in implementing and coordinating GBV-related activities. The position falls under the protection pillar of UNHCR’s operations and focuses on delivering high-quality, timely, and survivor-centered support to those affected by GBV.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support GBV Case Management: Provide direct support to survivors of GBV, ensuring that their confidentiality, dignity, and safety are respected at all times. Assist in referrals to appropriate services including medical care, psychosocial support, legal aid, and safe shelters.
- Community Engagement and Prevention: Work with community groups, women’s associations, youth clubs, and other stakeholders to raise awareness on GBV prevention. Facilitate training and educational sessions to promote gender equality and reduce stigma.
- Coordination and Partnerships: Assist in coordinating with local and international NGOs, government agencies, and health providers to ensure a holistic and integrated response to GBV. Participate in inter-agency meetings and contribute to joint assessments and planning.
- Monitoring and Reporting: Collect, analyze, and report data related to GBV incidents, service delivery, and trends. Ensure information is used to improve programming and inform protection strategies.
- Capacity Building: Support training for UNHCR staff, partners, and community-based protection actors on GBV principles, safe referrals, and survivor-centered approaches.
- Support GBV Mainstreaming: Work closely with sectors such as education, shelter, health, and WASH to ensure that GBV risk mitigation is integrated across programs.
