 Internship - Climate Resilience at Aga Khan Foundation Jobs In Kenya 

Job Description 

The overall purpose of the role is to provide support on climate resilience, both programmatic and operational to the Regional Climate Resilience Advisor and the Climate Resilience Team.   

Duties and Responsibilities

Establishment of Microforests.

  • Carry out site assessments for Microforest establishment sites including assessing site ownership, physical layout of the site terrain, soil conditions, biodiversity, and community needs, among others.
  • Lead in the procurement of required materials (saplings, compost, mulch, etc), transport, and casual labour for Microforest establishment
  • Participate in the planting of the Microforest trees and follow up activities at the designated Microforest sites.
  • Conduct monitoring visit of the established Microforests to determine tree survival rates, disease and pest surveillance, and any changes in biodiversity.

Documentation and Reporting.

  • Compilation and submission of data and reports on progress in Microforest establishment including (i) number and date of establishment, (ii) number of trees planted and type by species, (iii) Geographical / GPS location, (iv) Microforest land size in hectares, (v) tree survival rates, and (vi) changes in biodiversity.
  • Documentation of fieldwork observations and project activities.
  • Documentation of human-interest stories associated with the Microforests among the target communities.
  • Participate and present progress reports in weekly climate resilience progress review meetings.
  • Contribute to making project briefs for internal and external stakeholders.

Communication and Outreach.

  • Support in communication and outreach efforts to raise awareness about nature-based solutions and climate resilience.
  • Support in the development of communication materials including audio-visual and print materials.

Learning and Development.

  • Participate in learning opportunities to deepen understanding of climate resilience, nature-based solutions, and related topics.
  • Participate in training workshops and knowledge-sharing sessions, to enhance local communities' understanding of nature-based solutions and climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies.

Operation tasks.

  • Assist the project team in planning, organizing, and coordinating activities and events.
  • Support in organizing materials for training and field activities. 
  • Support with compiling copies of accounting and liquidation documents from training activities.
  • Maintain all project documentation and reports.
  • Support in maintaining an efficient inventory of both manual and online documents.
  • Support the team in maintaining data online including activity attendance data, payment schedules, and other participant financial records. 

The requirements

Required Qualifications, Experience, and Competences

  • Under-graduate degree in environmental studies, forestry, agroforestry, natural resource management, international development, or another relevant subject.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite: Excel, PowerPoint, and other Microsoft Office applications.
  • Good understanding of climate adaptation and resilience and/or economic development topics.
  • Strategic and operational planning, project management and analytical skills.
  • Strong writing skills and ability to clearly communicate technical concepts to popular audiences.
  • Ability to handle a variety of responsibilities and work both in a self-directed manner and as a team member.
  • Ability to develop comprehensive work plans and concise activity narrative reports.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail, seamless multitasking, efficient task management, and meeting tight deadlines
