Job Description 

 About the role

BOMU Hospital are seeking a dynamic and experienced Chief Risk and Legal Officer to join their executive team. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership abilities, exceptional communication skills, and a proven track record in risk management and legal affairs within the healthcare or professional service sector. They will report to the CEO and will supervise the team members in their department. They will also offer comprehensive expertise in legal and risk management, addressing all legal matters related to the organization’s operations, structures, and activities. This position requires a dedicated and forward-thinking individual with experience in legal and risk management in a dynamic environment. The role demands a keen eye for detail, a thorough understanding of the risk framework and legal requirements aligned to best practice in the services industry.

Key dimensions of the role

  • Provide strategic leadership and support to the CEO, deputizing as needed. The successful candidate will work closely with the CEO in setting and implementing the organizational goals and objectives.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with various stakeholders, including government agencies, political leaders, religious institutions, and community organizations.
  • Lead engagements with key institutions that impact the hospital's operations, advocating for the organization's interests and fostering collaboration and partnerships.
  • Drive negotiations and influence decision-making processes, both internally with senior leadership and externally with the board and other stakeholders.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of risk management strategies and legal frameworks to safeguard the organization's interests and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, best practices, and emerging risks, providing insights and recommendations to the executive team and board of directors.
  • Collaborate with internal departments, including finance, operations, and clinical services, to assess and mitigate risks and promote a culture of accountability and transparency.
  • Empower a team of legal and risk management professionals, providing guidance, mentorship, and professional development opportunities.
  • Provide guidance to the hospital’s management and train its staff on risk management strategies and any applicable legal regulations. This includes providing support to management on matters within the legal and regulatory framework, as well as overseeing adherence to legal and regulatory corporate governance requirements.
  • Draft, develop, review, and prepare various types of contracts and all other agreements while ensuring that they are legally sound and comply with the hospital’s policies and procedures.
  • Develop and continuously update the relevant policies for the hospital to address their current and future needs.

Skills and experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in law.
  • A minimum of 10-15 years of relevant experience in risk management, legal affairs, and related fields.
  • Working knowledge of compliance standards and regulations in Kenya.
  • Experience in the health care or service industry in a similar or related position is an added advantage.
  • Membership in relevant professional associations or certifications.
  • Exceptional leadership abilities with experience in leading diverse teams.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to inspire confidence and trust among multiple stakeholders.
  • Lead and motivate their team to achieve their individual and organizational goals.
  • They must be able to build and maintain positive relationships with their colleagues, stakeholders, and partners, creating a culture of collaboration and trust.
  • Must also be able to delegate effectively, empowering their team to take ownership of their work and achieve their best results.
  • Proven experience of engaging with diverse stakeholders and navigating complex   political, regulatory, and social landscapes.
  • Excellent negotiation skills and the ability to lead productive meetings with senior leadership and board members.
  • They must be able to articulate their ideas, and presentations in a clear, concise, and compelling way, inspiring others to support and follow them.
  • Previous experience in a similar position within a reputable organization in the   healthcare or professional service sector is preferred.
  • Inspires confidence through their verbal, written, reporting and presentation skills.
  • Analytical skills and problem-solving skills that will help the organization process data  and information to develop creative solutions to any challenges that may arise.
  • Upholds confidentiality and demonstrates ethical behaviour by ensuring that sensitive patient information, legal documents, and internal discussions remain private while exercising integrity in all its undertakings.
  • Must be available or willing to live in Mombasa.
